Amigos Establishes Earthquake Fund
Amigos is helping communities and ecosystems affected by the Jan. 8th earthquake.
Amigos of Costa Rica and its Costa Rican counterpart, the CRUSA Foundation, have established the Costa Rica Earthquake Relief Fund to help mitigate the effects of the earthquake that struck Costa Rica on January 8, 2009. The fund will provide a transparent and efficient means of helping to offset the estimated $100 million in damages brought on by the quake, including both near-term and medium-term efforts aimed at environmental remediation, local community economic development and recovery, and infrastructure repairs. Contributions to the fund are tax-deductible in the U.S., and Amigos of Costa Rica has issued a guarantee that 100 percent of funds received will go toward the relief and recovery efforts. Amigos of Costa Rica has established a website to facilitate secure, online donations:

Areas close to the quake’s epicenter in the province of Alajuela, 20 miles northwest of San José, were the hardest hit. Although the full extent of the damages remains unknown, it is widely agreed that both immediate relief and recovery efforts will require over $100 million in international assistance.
According to Amigos of Costa Rica Executive Director, David Schacht, “while we understand that short-term needs such as rescue, food and shelter are being met through local organizations and targeted international assistance, it is anticipated that much more will be needed to ensure adequate follow-up care, environmental remediation, infrastructure repairs, and local economic adjustment and development – recovery efforts that are essential to the rebuilding of distressed communities and the future safety of the estimated 128,000 Costa Ricans affected by the earthquake.” Specifically, the Costa Rica Earthquake Relief Fund has been established to provide:
