Comments on Costa Rica by Ricardo Ernst, University of Georgetown
Here is an opinion piece on CNN by Ricardo Ernst, University of Georgetown regarding Costa Rica's economic and political position in Latin America. The analysis provides good insight into what Costa Rica is doing well, and the critical link between political and economic stability, and progress against human development indicators. While the statistics he mentions are accurate, it is important to also recognize that this success is not without significant challenges. Costa Rican high school drop out rates are alarmingly high: 2 out of every 3 students who enter 1st grade will not complete high school. Biodiversity hotspots such as the Osa Peninsula are under increased threat from unplanned tourism development. Solid waste management, soil erosion and other pressure on diverse ecosystems are urgent environmental problems. Amigos of Costa Rica and the CRUSA Foundation are working with our parters to address these issues.
