Washington, D.C. and San José, Costa Rica – Amigos of Costa Rica and its Costa Rican counterpart, the CRUSA Foundation, have established the Costa Rica Earthquake Relief Fund to help mitigate the effects of the earthquake that struck Costa Rica on January 8, 2009. The fund will provide a transparent and efficient means of helping to offset the estimated $100 million in damages brought on by the quake, including both near-term and medium-term efforts aimed at environmental remediation, local community economic development and recovery, and infrastructure repairs.

Four days after an earthquake caused an estimated $100 million damage in Costa Rica, President Oscar Arias declared a state of emergency yesterday to speed rescue and recovery efforts.
