Operation Success is an interactive curriculum for high school students available 365 days a year, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day through an educational technology application located on the internet. By complementing traditional teaching methods with resources that relate to the modern teen’s digital lifestyle and offering study incentives such as prizes and participation in live, televised competitions, the program motivates students to acquire knowledge, increase their academic advantage, and broaden their personal and professional horizons. Already active in five countries, Operation Success was introduced to Costa Rica in 2008 and has already impacted 12,000 9th and 10th grade students in 100 schools throughout the country’s Greater Metropolitan Area. Amigos is supporting the expansion of the program to provide content to 11th graders, add an English education component, reach students in 9 schools in remote areas, and include an additional 40 schools within the metropolitan region.
Our $48,371 expansion project augments the $473,954 pilot project completed last year. The CRUSA Foundation covered the fixed costs of the pilot project, and we anticipate that new investments will help us reach 30,000 students at risk of dropping out of high school with a comprehensive Science, Math, and English curriculum and a socially cohesive “learning experience” tailored to the needs of the 21st century teenager. Other sources of funding include cash donations from Banco de Costa Rica, Radiográfica Costa Rica (RACSA), and Intel Corporation. In-kind contributions have come from VOX radio/MegaHits TV, InBio Parque, and Saprissa football, among others.
We are continuing to work with the Costa Rican Ministry of Education to enhance the program and increase its impact on Costa Rican youth. For more information, please visit the Operation Success website www.operacionexito.com or download our summary.
