Although Costa Rica has a tradition of conserving its natural resources, with more than 28% of its territory protected, the current water sanitation system only covers 30% of the country, with 4% of wastewater treated, and no culture of water conservation. This program will provide training for Costa Rican youth in water conservation and water management, resulting in a minimum reduction of water consumption of 20% per student. The purpose is to dramatically reduce wasteful water consumption at the 35 highest consumption-per-student schools.

Through this program, elementary and high school students are introduced to basic environmental concepts and knowledge that empower them to change their and their peers’ behavior and witness firsthand their ability to determine the future of water conservation in the country.

This initiative, developed by the Water Supply and Sewage Institute (AyA) and supported by the Ministry of Education and several local companies, has already trained over 5,000 students and resulted in water consumption reduction of 20% per student at more than 120 schools.
