Although Costa Rica has a tradition of conserving its natural resources, with more than 28% of its territory protected, the current water sanitation system only covers 30% of the country, with 4% of wastewater treated, and no culture of water conservation. This program will provide training for Costa Rican youth in water conservation and water management, resulting in a minimum reduction of water consumption of 20% per student. The purpose is to dramatically reduce wasteful water consumption at the 35 highest consumption-per-student schools.

In many of the poorest communities of Costa Rica, opportunities are rare for hardworking men and women to earn a living – there simply is little credit, financing or support for small businesses entrepreneurs and those who want to invest in their own communities. To address this urgent need, Peace Corps, FINCA, Amigos of Costa Rica and the CRUSA Foundation have partnered to promote sustainable development in these poorest communities of Costa Rica through the creation of Community Credit Enterprises (CCEs).
