Restoring coral reefs by connecting science and community.

About

Costa Rica Coral Restoration is a nonprofit organization dedicated to recovering, restoring, and propagating coral populations through science, education, and community participation. Using its coral laboratory and nursery sites, the organization grows healthy coral fragments for future transplantation while creating opportunities for local residents and visitors to learn about marine ecosystems. By making coral restoration accessible beyond the diving community, the organization builds awareness, encourages responsible practices, and engages people directly in protecting the marine environments that depend on healthy coral reefs.

Programs

Coral Restoration

Grows and propagates healthy coral fragments in laboratory tanks and nursery sites for future transplantation into local reefs.

Community Outreach & Education

Engages residents and visitors in learning about coral ecosystems, marine conservation, and the importance of healthy reefs.

Current Need

Protecting vulnerable coral genetics during large-scale bleaching events requires immediate investment in restoration capacity. Costa Rica Coral Restoration needs to expand its laboratory and add more tanks to preserve and grow healthy coral fragments for future reef restoration. With no government funding, donations, guided laboratory visits, and volunteer support are essential to maintaining the program and advancing its long-term goal of restoring local coral populations to levels not seen in decades.

Growing Stronger Every Year

We’re proud to participate in Amigos of Costa Rica’s Transparency Badge System, which evaluates organizations across three key areas: financial stewardship, governance, and community impact.

Organizations are recognized at four levels of growth: Seed, Sprout, Sapling, and Tree, helping donors better understand each organization’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

The badges displayed below reflect our current achievements and our ongoing commitment to strengthening our organization and maximizing our impact.
