Giving every rescue a second chance at home.

About

Halfway Home Tamarindo rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes stray, abandoned, and neglected dogs and cats in the greater Tamarindo area. Founded in 2020 and based in Lomas de Matapalo, the organization provides shelter, veterinary care, foster placements, and adoption support while addressing the causes of animal overpopulation through large-scale castration campaigns. Halfway Home also supports local families with animal care resources and promotes responsible pet ownership through community education, working toward lasting improvements in animal welfare across the region.

Programs

Rescue & Adoption

Provides abandoned and neglected dogs and cats with shelter, medical care, rehabilitation, foster support, and opportunities for loving homes.

Castration Campaigns

Provides accessible spay and neuter services to prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of animals living on the streets.

Community Education & Support

Promotes responsible pet ownership while supporting local families through education, food drives, vaccination clinics, and affordable veterinary care.

Current Need

Bringing animal welfare services closer to local communities is a key priority for Halfway Home in 2026. The organization aims to increase annual adoptions beyond 150 animals, expand vaccination and castration campaigns into surrounding towns, and strengthen education for elementary-aged children around responsible pet ownership. Volunteers, animal sponsorships, donations, and support for facility improvements can help provide better care for current rescues while preventing more dogs and cats from experiencing life on the streets.

Growing Stronger Every Year

We’re proud to participate in Amigos of Costa Rica’s Transparency Badge System, which evaluates organizations across three key areas: financial stewardship, governance, and community impact.

Organizations are recognized at four levels of growth: Seed, Sprout, Sapling, and Tree, helping donors better understand each organization’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.

The badges displayed below reflect our current achievements and our ongoing commitment to strengthening our organization and maximizing our impact.
