About Us

We are CADENA, a nonprofit humanitarian organization committed to disaster prevention, relief, and resilience-building around the world. At our core, we believe in the power of humanity. We inspire and mobilize people to take compassionate action—so that together, we can build a world that is resilient, just, and equitable for all.

We work in prevention, education, and emergency response. Our teams respond to disasters and crises globally, delivering life-saving aid, coordinating rescue operations, and providing support where it's needed most.

CADENA is the humanitarian arm of Jewish communities worldwide, but our work knows no borders. We serve all people—regardless of origin, faith, or background—because compassion has no limits.

Our Programs

— Emergency Responese
— Migration Crisis
— Agua Ya
— Yo Respondo

Emergency Response

In 2024, we intervened to address climate crises in Costa Rica during the months with the heaviest rainfall nationwide. In coordination with the National Emergency Commission, Municipal Emergency Committees, the Red Cross, and Public Force, we achieved presence in most affected areas, using all available means of transportation: cars, trucks, ferry, boat, and helicopter. This allowed us to deliver effective hand-to-hand aid in the most remote places under adverse weather conditions. We provided groceries, medical attention, personal hygiene kits, and water purification filters.

Emergencies we have addressed include floods and fires, both massive and localized in specific communities.

People benefited in 2024: 6,301

Migration Crisis

Three years ago, we detected the need to respond to the new reality of migrant populations in transit through Costa Rica, moving from South to North across the Darién. We are present at CATEM in the southern border, providing medical and psychological consultations, and operating a container with clothes and shoes for migrants.

Through the installation of our medical container and the construction of our first Solidarity Dormitory, we consolidated our presence at the northern border. Our Humanitarian Stations at both borders (North/South) support the migrant population and also respond to the return movements from North to South.

We work in coordination with the Ministry of Public Security, the Directorate of Migration, the Professional Migration Police, the Ministry of Health, various United Nations agencies, civil society organizations, foundations, and local groups.

People benefited in 2024: 329,258

Agua Ya

Agua Ya is a sustainability and resilience project created by CADENA Costa Rica. Its objective is to provide vulnerable communities, especially in rural areas, with a common source of clean water. We designed a rainwater harvesting system that is effective, durable, and easy to install.

In 2024, we worked in Buenos Aires de Puntarenas across 9 schools located within the Cabécar indigenous territory. The project was selected through an alliance with the Municipality of Buenos Aires to provide potable water to young students in remote rural areas with limited access to water resources.

People directly benefited in 2024: 1,620

Yo Respondo

This project is developed for schools located in vulnerable areas or with populations at social risk. These workshops empower communities through their youth in formal education settings, preparing them as change agents and first responders for crisis situations.

We started in 2023 with Colegio Rincón Grande in Pavas, training youth aged 15–18. We have also worked in the San José High School (7 modules) and Guácimo Technical High School (4-hour program). In some cases, participation in this program counts toward graduation requirements. Programs conclude with a community field activity, such as beach cleanups, and are implemented in partnership with municipalities, the National Emergency Commission, and the Fire Department.
