Casa Sonja: Ecovillage for Children and Women of Costa Rica- is a place of hope.

Casa Sonja is a locally based non-profit organization that offers relief for women and children who are witnesses to extreme poverty or domestic violence. The doors of our shelter are open to those in Cobano and the surrounding area to provide protection, personal development, and inclusion.

Located on the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, in one of the world’s rare blue zones, the natural environment plays an important role in this organization.   Fundamentals in the day-to-day life of those in our protective community include nutritious local foods, a sense of community, a peaceful environment, and an open approach to creative education and human enlightenment.

Our shelter has a fully developed agriculture program where children learn how to plant, grow, and cook their organic nutrient-rich food. They participate with other local schools to experience immersion in the community.  They develop knowledge in how to live a life that is self-sustaining by gaining the skills needed to re-enter the world with strength and confidence. They also learn about sustainability, and respect of animals. In addition to basic government education, all children will have the opportunity to optionally join various clubs to participate in communal beach clean-ups, local art and culture classes, language courses, surfing, and much more. Religion can be one of those non mandatory clubs, in witch tutors will always be women.

As an important aspect of our commitment, we offer security and access to mental health care professionals in an effort to provide relief from stress and fear so that our residents can achieve self-reliance and freedom in order to become their very best.

Casa Sonja is a place of hope.  It weaves the threads of varied human experiences and beliefs into one colorful fabric encouraging kindness, acceptance, and compassion.  Casa Sonja is a loving community that is intertwined with nature and focused on a healthy and peaceful future for all.
