Amigos del Aprendizaje (Friends of Learning) is a leading Costa Rican non-profit organization that works to improve children's learning opportunities, through motivating them to read and write for a purpose, contributing to reduce high school dropout, break the cycle of poverty and enable ALL children to thrive.

To achieve its mission, ADA:

  • Facilitates online teacher professional development - with over 4,000 teacher graduates since 2011;
  • Organizes the National Children’s Writing Contest, "Mi Cuento Fantástico" - with 75,000 children and 5,000 teacher participants since 2012; and
  • Coordinates the annual ProLEER international network and meeting of educational leaders at Harvard University, to strengthen evidence based reading practice, research and policy in Latin America.

ADA is in all 7 provinces of Costa Rica through its online programs, which use evidence-based reading and writing practices developed through a decade long collaboration with researchers at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Universidad Estatal a Distancia and the Costa Rican Ministry of Education.

Every year since 2012, ADA organizes the National Children's Writing Contest to motivate school communities  to engage children in reading and writing by connecting them to the power of storytelling. This program responds to teacher's needs for accessible reading material, lesson plans, and support for socio-emotional learning in the classroom.
