"It has long been my dream that the Green Ark Botanical Garden become a place where all can learn about plants that have economic and practical life support uses for mankind.”
-Harve Thomas, Founder
Located in Santa Barbara de Heredia on a beautiful eight-hectare (19 acres) property, The Ethnobotanical Garden is the heart of the Green Ark Foundation. The Garden started in 1991 as a producing fresh herb farm with a botanical garden collection in the center that eventually grew to be so much more: a place to learn, a place to be one with nature, a medicinal plant repository.
Our mission is to share knowledge that is sadly being lost along with the biodiversity that sustains it. We aim to educate on the use and benefits of plants to improve the life and well-being of the planet and ourselves. Learning starts with a visit to our thematic ethnobotanical garden terraces- a Medicinal Garden, a Culinary Garden, a Tropical Food Garden (Milpa), an Essential Oils Garden, and a Natural Colorants Garden- and continues through fruit orchards, flowering trees pathways, a Sacred Garden and palm and bamboo trails.
