Tierra Valiente is a post capitalist experiment that aims to create a resilient, bioregional approach to land stewardship and local flourishing in San Juan, Alajuela, Costa Rica. We are part of a broader ecosystem creating “islands of coherence” in the midst of collapse. We do this through Tierra Valiente Trust (a nonprofit that cultivates resilience through a mutual-aid network, solidarity funding for underserved communities and commons infrastructure) and via the educational offerings at our Center for Applied Cultural Transition. We are based in the Arenal region of Costa Rica on the ancestral lands of the Maleku.
Tierra Valiente Trust, akin to a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States, is based in San Juan, Alajuela, Costa Rica. Our mission is to cultivate ecological and social well-being by fostering resilience and strengthening connections between communities and the living world. In an era defined by climate change, economic volatility, and political instability, our work is dedicated to deepening relationships and developing adaptive systems that enable the conditions to thrive in the face of adversities and uncertain futures. We are committed to ensuring the health, well-being, and quality of life for all human and more-than-human kin.
To achieve this, Tierra Valiente Trust has three programs:
1) Mutual-Aid Network
2) Solidarity Circle
3) The Commons
Fuerza de Amor (FDA) is a mutual-aid network in San Juan, Alajuela, Costa Rica dedicated to cultivating resilience, solidarity, and collective well-being. Initiated during the pandemic, FDA is building relationships within the bioregion and supporting systems for deeper connection and resilience. In 2025, FDA will focus on strengthening food, water, and community systems through volunteer-driven programs. Key initiatives include water protection of local rivers, a recycling program, food resilience efforts, and collaborations with other local organizations supporting the ecosystem and community.

The Solidarity Circle offers financial assistance to marginalized communities and those who serve them, enabling participation in spaces dedicated to collective care, rest and healing. These spaces are guided by Indigenous wisdom carriers and embodied practitioners who create pathways for repair and regeneration. Contributions specifically support providing access to Tierra Valiente’s Center for Applied Cultural Transition in San Juan, Alajuela, Costa Rica for Costa Rican Nationals, Indigenous peoples, people of the global majority, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
The land that Tierra Valiente is situated on is held in trust by our nonprofit entity, Tierra Valiente Trust. This framework ensures that there are no individual land owners; instead, there are stewards and caretakers of the land. Grants and funds allocated to the commons are reinvested in developing infrastructure that fosters resilience and enhances community connections in San Juan.
This includes:
— Essential infrastructure such as roads, and systems for water, waste, and energy management.
— Enhancing food resilience through regenerative and syntropic farming practices.
— Establishing biodiversity corridors and conserving land.
— Developing communal educational spaces, such as schools or libraries.
— Creating communal spaces for gathering, healing, and wellbeing.
— Providing residential housing for communal use, offering locals access as a countermeasure to gentrification.
