Started in 2018 by Carolina Sevilla and Maurcio Cortes, 5MBCF’s main goals are reducing humans’ impact on the environment, educating future generations on sustainable consumption and elimination of single-use plastics, cleaning up beaches and waterways, and organizing communities to allow for regeneration of marine ecosystems.
The 5MBCF team has removed hundreds of tons of plastic from the oceans with their organized beach cleanups and has inspired hundreds of thousands of tons to be cleaned up with their global call-to-action.
Ocean Heroes is an educational program designed for elementary school students that teaches the importance of conscious consumption, the global impact our oceans have in day to day life, and the negative effects of plastic pollution.
Friends of the Ocean works with the tourism industry to reduce its impact on oceans by creating feel-good educational experiences and hosting convenient recycling centers for marine plastic at common tourist locations.
Trace Your Plastic’s goal is to create a blue-circular economy model in its communities by transforming marine debris (plastic recovered from beaches and marine environments that is otherwise considered trash) into new products that are both sustainable and traceable.
