We are a non profit organization that works with patients that were diagnosed with rare diseases through the newborn screening program in Costa Rica. Since those rare diseases are related to the incapability of processing certain metabolites in their bodies, their living conditions become very difficult. Therefore, we provide diapers, milk and special food that meets their dietary restrictions.
We also prepare workshops to educate parents and teachers about the necessities that our patients require during different phases of their life; we teach them what food they should they eat and the amount per meal, how to prepare different recipes, and the psychological approach that these patients need--because if they don't follow the strict diet they may suffer severe cognitive disfunction in the future.
We also have workshops for mothers to teach them ways to make a living from home. This is because most of the time these patients require a full-time caregiver and unfortunately, it is very common that fathers abandon their families once they face the hardships of dealing with a child with a rare disease. Thus, mothers find themselves in a very difficult situation and have to figure out how generate an income to support their family. Our workshops help them to know they are not alone, and also empower them into entrepreneurs that are valuable among society. Besides that, we try to assist with scholar material every year, and also we have a neurodevelopmental teacher that works with the children and evaluates their learning-status. This gives us a feedback and helps us personalized the companionship for every patient in their particular journey.
Finally, we are planning on creating a new generation sequencing laboratory, that (if successful) will be the first in Costa Rica to help diagnose rare disease patients at a faster rate, avoiding sequels that come with a late diagnosis that are irreversible. Also, we would be able to help cancer patients or others that suffer diagnostic odysseys, to get a diagnosis and reduce morbidity and mortality rates. But this is a dream that only may come true with your help.
