Residents of the community of Las Delicias on the Nicoya Peninsula have endured effective water rationing – no water for five hours each weekday since early March – as output from two existing wells dropped by about 25% during the 2023 dry season. Demand is meanwhile about 60% greater than during the rainy months.
The extreme rationing by the local water provider (ASADA El Molino Las Delicias) was prompted by an equipment failure that resulted in no water at all for approximately 5 days in late February. The pumps in the two existing wells are overtaxed, as without the rationing, they could not be allowed to cool and one unit failed catastrophically. At one time the two pumps supported some 260 households, today they support upwards of 430, with 60 more meters committed for new residents. The third well will increase output by an estimated 40% and take pressure off the existing wells.
The wet season may well prove disappointing this year because of El Niño in the Pacific – thus a new well is all the more necessary for the community!
Land has been donated for the new well and the site evaluated. The ASADA needs approximately $80,000 for the new well to be drilled, pumps installed in a new pump house, and integration with the existing system and its more than 26 kilometers of pipes. Upwards of $26,000 has been raised to date – but we urgently need your continued support.
The ASADA is overseen by Costa Rica’s national AyA water agency (the Instituto Costarricense de Acueductos y Alcantarillados). It is managed by a voluntary board of directors, all of whom are local residents.
In addition to providing adequate potable water to the residents and businesses of Las Delicias, ASADA El Molino works to maintain its status as a recipient of the Blue Flag Ecological Program (Bandera Azul Ecológica). To this end, the ASADA educates and creates awareness among the youth and residents of Las Delicias, addressing our environmental impact and ways to live harmoniously with nature and its beings. Each year ASADA aids in the distribution of seedlings and encourages residents to participate in reforestation projects.
